Prepare for Maker Faire with these 3 tips

Prepare for Maker Faire with these 3 tips

Our favorite time of the year is here – Maker Faire season! Each summer, Maker Faire hosts the greatest show (and tell) in locations across the world. This festival of innovation and STEM-fueled creativity brings some of the most prominent tech companies, makers, hobbyists and tinkerers together for a family-friendly science fair unlike you’ve ever seen.

Looking at the list of speakers, makers, sponsors, and program schedule can be overwhelming. We’ve attended several Maker Faires throughout the years – both as makers and as sponsors. Last year, we even had a booth at World Maker Faire New York. After years of attendance, we understand the struggles of schedule conflicts, not preparing for rain and getting lost in the crowd. That’s why we’ve created a quick list of tips to help you prepare for Maker Faire.

Plan out your days

First things first, download the program guide and event map for the Maker Faire you’re attending. You can find these home pages for each respective Maker Faire. Print out a few copies and highlight the events you’d like to attend. This will give you the chance to find and fix any schedule conflicts, plan meeting spots, set up lunch/snack times and get you familiar with the Faire’s layout.

In previous years, Maker Faire had apps for the festival that included event times and maps. Check the App Store and Google Play store to see if the Maker Faire you’re attending has its own app.

Stay comfortable and come prepared

You’ll be on your feet all day, so it’s best to wear comfortable walking sneakers. Wear a comfy outfit, like shorts and a t-shirt, you won’t mind being outside in. Pack a light backpack or bag with a hat, shades, sunscreen, a windbreaker or jacket if the weather is questionable, an umbrella, a camera and a portable charger for your phone. Don’t forget your copies of the program guide and event map either. It's also a good idea to double check Maker Faire’s FAQ section for any questions you have about prohibited items, tickets and more.

Have fun!

Maker Faire is all about celebrating the STEM and Maker Movement communities. Enjoy every minute of it! Go exploring, participate in a few workshops and learn as much as possible. Let your curiosity run wild and visit as many booths and exhibits as you can.  Make sure you take pictures and share them with the community using the hashtag #makerfaire.
